MS-UK Helpline (Laura, Ryan and Shaun)

How MS-UK can support those who are newly diagnosed

In this brief blog, Shaun from our helpline team explains how MS-UK support people who have recently received an MS diagnosis.

Being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) is a life changing event which brings with it a melting pot of emotions, and for many, a bucketful of unanswered questions. Adjusting to a life with MS can take time and this process will be different for each and every individual. It is therefore important, in these early days of your MS journey, to be aware of where you can access support that is reliable, knowledgeable and delivered with empathy and care.

Step forward the MS-UK helpline. We are a small team comprising myself (Shaun), and my colleagues Laura and Ryan. What you will get from us at the very least is access to someone who cares, who will listen to your concerns and who can then, if you wish, signpost you to information and services which you may find helpful.  As a team we strive to ensure that the support we offer is consistent, tailored to your needs and importantly, provided in confidence.

While we are not a team of trained counsellors, we are well voiced in giving emotional support, something which is vital for many in the early post-diagnosis days. We are also available to answer any of your MS related questions and much more, from making sense of the benefits maze, your rights at work to navigating localised support. Whatever the issues that may be affecting you, we are here to listen, support and help you to start building new pathways in life.

This blog is an open invitation to anyone who has recently been diagnosed with MS to contact us when you are ready to do so. At the very least we can offer a listening ear and inform you of the fantastic services that MS-UK as a whole provides. I understand that sometimes making that initial contact is the most difficult for many, which is entirely natural in such emotive circumstances. However, you will be greeted with nothing but warmth, empathy and respect, something which most of us need when life hits us with the unexpected.

The MS-UK helpline is open between the hours of 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
