Managing symptoms of MS

Managing symptoms

Many people with advanced or advancing multiple sclerosis (MS) will have complex issues with symptoms relating both to their MS and possible secondary issues. Secondary issues that may have an impact can be things like bed sores or persistent urinary infections.

People can be left feeling that as there are unlikely to be treatments that can alter the course of their MS, which may well be the case but there are medications, therapies and treatments that can help people live well with their condition.

Although there have been advances in Disease Modifying Therapies (DMTs) for progressive MS in recent years, it is often true that there are no DMTs available to people with advanced MS. However there are a range of symptomatic treatments available to both your GP and your MS team. It may be helpful to read our Choices booklets on symptoms and complementary therapies as this highlights many of the treatments available. Our information makes suggestions on how and where you may be able to access these therapies.. The booklets also make suggestions for self-management techniques and contains quotes and tips from other people with MS.
