Planning for family life can be a source of anxiety for many, but living with multiple sclerosis (MS) does not mean you should restrict the relationships you want and need. MS affects more women than men and is most commonly diagnosed at an age when people may be thinking about starting a family or extending the family they already have. The website My MS Space (developed by the pharmaceutical company Biogen) has a range of useful resources about sex, family planning and becoming a parent.
In 2019 a new consensus for pregnancy care in MS was published. The consensus is endorsed by the Association of British Neurologists (ABN) and was put together by experienced associated health professionals and included people with MS in its development. The consensus states that pregnancy does not increase the risk of active MS. MS-UK have a Choices booklet all about Pregnancy and MS that includes information on pre-pregnancy counselling and tips from other parents. Being informed on the subject can help you and those around you to make considered and balanced decisions and choices about the future.
