This session explores the topic of overactive bladder (OAB) management, a condition characterised by urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence. OAB significantly impacts quality of life, particularly for older adults and individuals living with neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), where bladder dysfunction is a frequent and distressing symptom.
The session is presented in collaboration with CliniMed, a UK-based supplier of stoma, continence, urology, and wound care. Louise Harrison, Community Nurse Specialist, will provide an overview of current treatment pathways, first-line conservative treatments, medication options, and more advanced third-line therapies such as Botox, percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS), and sacral nerve stimulation (SNS), highlighting both their benefits and considerations.
First-line management typically includes conservative strategies such as bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, and fluid intake adjustments. When these are not effective, patients may be prescribed medications like anticholinergics or beta-3 agonists. These can offer relief but are often limited by side effects.
For patients who do not respond to or tolerate medication, third-line treatments such as Botox injections into the bladder wall, percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS), and sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) may be offered.
Louise will introduce Tensi+, a non-invasive, at-home neuromodulation device designed to treat OAB.
We will close with a summary of the current challenges in managing OAB, particularly in complex cases like MS and how Tensi+ offers a safe, effective, and accessible treatment option. The session concludes with a question and answer segment to address clinical application, patient selection, and implementation in practice.
We will also be joined by Jane Graham, New Product Development Specialist at CliniMed Ltd, who will be able to answer your questions on the Tensi+ device, using supporting clinical evidence for its use.
You can find out more about this topics in out informational Choices booklet on Bladder and bowel health, featuring a comprehensive overview of available management options.
