Next course – Wednesday 13, 20 and 27 November at 6pm-7pm
Our newly diagnosed course runs quarterly, offering three one-hour sessions, and is open to those affected by MS. By the end, participants will have a solid understanding of MS, increased confidence in managing their symptoms, and a supportive community to lean on.
This three part course has been created by MS-UK’S Helpline team in partnership with the MS community through our Virtual Insight Panel and our existing network of volunteers with a lived experience of MS. The Course has been written for individuals who are newly diagnosed or who have recently re-engaged with their multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis.
The Course will be delivered over three consecutive weekly sessions and aims to help people better understand their MS and provide tools for managing life with the condition. It covers key areas like building confidence after diagnosis, offering strategies for living well, and debunking the myths by offering up-to-date information.
Participants will gain a stronger grasp of the condition, its symptoms, and available treatments, moving toward self-management and acceptance. The program emphasises that with the right strategies, treatments, and support networks, people can thrive with MS.
Peer support is a way to reduce the isolation often experienced by people living with MS. Participants will be encouraged to connect with others who share lived experiences, providing valuable emotional support, advice, and encouragement.
To find out more about what each session will cover, please see the session overviews below. Please follow the link to view our Newly Diagnosed Choices booklet.
We’ll start with introductions and set some ground rules for a safe, confidential space. After breaking down key MS terms, we’ll cover the basics: what MS is, how it affects the body, and the different types of MS and symptoms. A volunteer will share their diagnosis journey, followed by practical advice on managing everyday life, like driving, work, and benefits.
This session focuses on living well with MS. We’ll dive into symptom management, from handling relapses to treatment options like disease-modifying therapies. You’ll hear about the healthcare professionals who support MS care and learn how to maximise your appointments. We’ll also discuss strategies for maintaining overall wellness—both physical and mental.
In the final session, we’ll explore how to talk about MS with friends, family, and colleagues, and the value of support networks. We’ll cover self-management tips, from tracking symptoms to staying active, and highlight the importance of exercise and brain health. You’ll also make a plan for your next steps to living well with MS.
