Move with confidence – Activities for daily living with MS

Friday 13 December at 2:30pm

Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) presents unique challenges, but with the right exercises, you can maintain independence, improve energy, and feel more confident in tackling daily tasks. Join us for this practical and supportive session with Alan Pearson, where we’ll explore movement exercise and strategies to make everyday life easier and more manageable.

This session is designed specifically for people living with MS, focusing on movements that

  • Support energy conservation and reduce fatigue
  • Build strength and stability for daily activities
  • Improve coordination and balance, reducing the risk of falls
  • Help you feel empowered and in control of your body

We’ll guide you through a gentle, MS-friendly routine that mirrors a typical day. You’ll learn how to integrate exercises into your daily activities, from waking up in the morning to managing household tasks and personal care.

  • Wake-up moves – start your day right with simple sitting exercises for the bed or chair practicing the common movements during transfers
  • Standing exercises – practice movements like split-stance lunges, plie squats, and sit-to-stand transitions to build strength and stability for tasks like getting out of bed, picking items off the floor, or reaching into cupboards
  • Walking confidence – balance drills like weight shifting, calf raises, and gentle leg swings to help you move with ease and steadiness
  • Fine motor skills – Finger walking and wrist exercises to improve dexterity for personal care tasks like dressing, buttoning clothes, and holding utensils
  • Upper body strength – shoulder and elbow exercises to boost your ability to reach, lift, and carry out daily activities such as cooking, eating and personal care

What the session will focus on

  • Energy conservation – learn how to perform tasks efficiently to manage fatigue
  • Develop endurance – simple strategies to handle repetitive tasks, like cleaning or preparing meals, reducing exertion
  • Balance and coordination – exercises to improve stability and reduce the risk of falls, so you can move more confidently
  • Functional Movements – practical ways to make daily tasks such as washing, dressing, transferring, or walking more manageable and less tiring

We understand MS can affect everyone differently, so we’ll tailor the session to accommodate a range of abilities. Whether you experience fatigue, balance issues, or limited mobility, we’ll help you discover movements that work for you.

This session is perfect for people living with MS who want to

  • Stay active and independent
  • Find new ways to manage daily challenges
  • Boost their confidence and physical ability
