Managing mental health – the Mind toolkit

We will be recording!!! If you are unable to join the session live, we have made last minute arrangements to record the session and make it available to view for two weeks. To watch live or view the recording, please click the orange button below.

Thursday 10 October is World Mental Health Day 2024 and we have invited Karys Matthams from Suffolk Mind, to discuss their Mental Health Toolkit.

This session introduces their approach to taking care of your mental health and wellbeing. To help you stay well, we will be reviewing the use of an ‘organising idea’ – that everyone has physical and emotional needs and a set of skills and resources that we’re born with to meet those needs. This is referred to as the Emotional Needs and Resources approach (see here).

It provides you with fascinating insights into the 12 physical and emotional needs and the nine resources available to everyone as ways to manage these needs. We all sit on the mental health continuum, with stress as a crossover point between wellbeing and mental ill health.

One in four of us will have a period of mild/moderate mental ill health in any given year. If we can avoid stress as much as possible, we can help prevent mental ill health – this can be difficult when living with a long-term health condition such as multiple sclerosis. Meeting our emotional needs and using our innate resources in ways that serve us well can help us to reduce stress.

While just a snapshot of The Essentials, our Introduction to The Mental Health Toolkit will help you begin to discover more about your emotional needs, and the innate resources we have to get them met. This will improve your confidence in taking steps that help to keep your mental health in check while also dealing with the daily challenges that come with a condition like MS.

About Karys Matthams

Karys is a trainer and psychotherapist with personal experience of multiple sclerosis. She is passionate about supporting people living with long term conditions to create a life that works for them.

Her work as a trainer and psychotherapist with Mid and North-East Essex Mind and Suffolk Mind have allowed her to follow this passion and she has led many workshops for people living with a range of health challenges.

“The Emotional Needs and Resources” approach to taking care of mental health allows people to feel more in control of their wellbeing by providing a concrete framework that helps them to see what is working or not working in their life. This then helps them to choose which changes they want to make to improve their mental health. Karys can’t wait to share it with you!
