The term Blue Monday is thought to have originated over a century ago, used to describe the low mood many factory workers experienced when returning to work after the weekend. Today, Blue Monday is widely recognised as an awareness day and typically falls on the third Monday in January, a time when many people report feeling at their lowest emotionally. This year, Blue Monday falls on 19 January.

For many, this period can be particularly challenging. The combination of post-festive fatigue, darker days, colder weather, and the general slump that often comes with January can have a noticeable impact on mood and wellbeing. For those living with a long-term condition such as multiple sclerosis (MS), these challenges can feel even more pronounced.

That said, the start of a new year can also offer an opportunity for reflection and positive change. While the familiar “new year, new me” mindset can be motivating, it’s often helpful to have guidance and support in identifying realistic, meaningful changes that truly support wellbeing.

Join Ryan from the MS-UK Helpline Team for this supportive and informative session, Maintaining Positive Mental Health – Top Tips for Blue Monday. In this one-hour session, we’ll explore the relationship between MS and mental health and share practical tips and strategies to help you stay balanced, resilient, and supported during this time of year.

We’ll discuss a range of self-management techniques designed to support positive mental health, and there will be opportunities to listen, reflect, and share experiences with others in a safe and welcoming space. The session will also highlight a variety of online and virtual resources, including nationally available services and grassroots community projects that offer ongoing support.

Whether you’re looking for practical tools, reassurance, or a sense of connection, this session offers a chance to pause, reflect, and take positive steps toward supporting your mental wellbeing this winter.
