MS creative writing groups online

“I really enjoyed the poetry course. I write for a living but don’t always give myself the time and space to write creatively.”

“I was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in April 2021, amid the pandemic after experiencing sensory symptoms and balance issues for over a year. I have incomplete remission, which means my symptoms (tingly feet, mobility issues, fatigue and weakness) are always with me.

“I use trekking poles or a wheelchair to ambulate. Before diagnosis, I was very active. I am a yoga teacher and rock climbing, hiking and long-distance cycle touring were some of my favourite hobbies.

“I have had to cut down on my working hours due to fatigue and cognitive overload. I am a freelance media producer and content creator, which allows me the freedom to work from home and choose the hours that work best for me.

“I first used MS-UK Counselling last winter. I did six virtual sessions with a talk therapist and when that came to an end, I was looking for something to replace that weekly connection with someone who understood my situation. I enrolled in the eight-week Mindfulness Based Stress reduction (MBSR) course and the eight-week poetry course (now Writing for Wellbeing.)

“The counselling helped with the depression I was feeling about my diagnosis and pervasive symptoms. I learned cognitive behaviour therapy skills to shift my mindset and reframe my thinking. Though I was not new to meditation, the MBSR course helped me hone a daily meditation practice, which I have been able to keep up with upon completion of the course. I’ve also stayed in touch with my classmates through a WhatsApp group where we can share struggles and best practices.

“I enjoyed the poetry course. I write for a living but don’t always give myself the time and space to write creatively. Upon its completion, I learned that the Creative Writing Peer Pod needed a new host and I volunteered to fill in. Our virtual meetings are monthly on the first Wednesday of the month from 1:30-3 p.m. and everyone’s invited to join.

“MS-UK offers enriching programs that promote connection, mental and physical wellness and positivity. I would recommend anyone with MS check out their offerings which range from virtual yoga and exercise classes to workshops on health topics related to MS and the aforementioned courses.”
